The reason this phone is such a big deal is that it’s the first device ever released with Qualcomm’s awesome new Snapdragon processor and

chipset, which tops out at 1.3GHz (that’s as fast as the Intel Atom processor used on netbooks and it’s in a PHONE!)–this phone gets the slightly less quick 1GHz processor with the QSD8×50 chipset. According to Engadget, |
“The new chipset supports multi-mode UMTS andCDMA 3G connectivity in the same 15 x 15-mm package as well as featuring enhanced 2D acceleration and 3D graphics core, integrated GPS, high-def video recording and playback, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, and support for WXGA (1280×800 pixels) displays pumping out your choice of MediaFLO, DVBH, or ISDB-T digital mobile television.”
Here, look: we’re now getting processing power equal to that of current netbooks (which will do *almost* everything a laptop will do) in our phones. This means that since several netbooks, like the Samsung N510 which is packing the same GPU as a Macbook Pro that allows it to handle the same

graphics as a serious laptop, are now capable of exactly the same stuff as lower-end laptops. Therefore, netbooks are soon expected to essentially become small laptops, and mobile phones like the Toshiba TG01 have the same processing power as those netbooks, so it’s not much of a stretch to say we’ll have |
full-on computing power and capabilities in our cell phones within a couple of years–yes, basically you’ll be able to carry your laptop around in your pocket in a package the size of the TG01, how about that?

Toshiba TG01 Release in the U.K.
It’s official: the TG01 will be released for sale to the public in the U.K. on July 9th, starting with a press event in London to launch it. The website Orange.co.uk did have the TG01 listed here as ‘coming soon’, but they’ve since taken it down because it’s gotten a lot of attention online. Definitely keep checking back there, I’ll bet they put it back up at some point.

Basic Tech Specs
The TG01 is sporting a relatively huge 4.1 inch W-VGA screen, will run Windows Mobile 6.1, has 5 hours of talk time and 11 days of standby, comes with Facebook & Youtube apps pre-installed, WiFi, microSD expansion, GPS, a 3.1 megapixel camera and, of course, the simply blisteringly fast 1Ghz SnapDragon CPU on board.

Windows Mobile? Bwahahahaa…. No wonder it has a 1Ghz processor. Does it have a reset button, too?

Yeah I know, I keep hearing about the Symbian OS being considered for a lot of these new smart phones and it never happens, disappointing…

Windows Mobile is actually very good, it is much more mature than -for example- osX mobile (possibility of copy paste and video shooting is not new on windows mobile for example, and bluetooth headphones work, which is not the case on iphones), and even if it did look a bit old modifying the interface like htc did with their Touchflo gives it a modern look (and ease of use). Symbian on the other hand is not that good, since it is now owned by Nokia which makes it very difficult to see on other brands, and apparently what they did of Symbian is not as good as what htvc did with Windows Mobile. Reviews on Nokia touchscreen phones seem to agree on the fact that they are not very good (given their price). Now this phone looks quite nice, I don’t have speed comparisons between Nokia touch phones and HTC phones, but one of the major drawback in terms of speed between the Touch Pro and the iphone is it’s slower processor, and slower gpu, all that with a bigger resolution. The Toshiba must be really responsive because of its much faster processor, and it is certainly very capable of reading divx (even with special software the touch Pro has some issues with that). Apparently they made a nice interface too, not as pretty as TouchFlo in my opinion, but it’s a matter of taste. But come on, why don’t they bundle it with a useable web navigator, such as Opera ? IE mobile is really really crappy. I also wonder if there is a 3.5mm earphones plug ? And GPS ? The chipset has the option, it doesn’t mean (and it doesn’t seem that) it will be in the phone… A fast CPU is not everything…

It’s Interesting that the Toshiba TG01 only has two buttons on the front – the home and the back buttons – and they look capacitative at that. The dial and hang-up buttons are implemented within the soft key area which is new in a WM device.

Even a very speedy processor can’t save the TG01 from the fact that Windows Mobile is a nightmare on a touchscreen phone.
